“Sara Daniels’ Ascent of the Earth Mole truly won me over with its uniqueness and cohesion. The entire manuscript is interesting and surprising, both in subject and format. It’s innovative, weird, and funny—everything I want a collection of poems to be. Ascent of the Earth Mole does not take itself too seriously, neither is it a joke. The poems are funny but deliver beyond the laugh and the quirkiness. This book is compelling, using both traditional and nontraditional poetic forms as well as visuals and white space to pull the reader along for the earth mole’s journey. The mole is, of course, not just a mole, but through the mole, Daniels is able to convey the importance of a quest,—the discoveries we all must make for ourselves. These possibilities and the universality of life are illustrated in “Lair: A Blueprint”: “In another future, he does one thousand tricks. / Dizzy dizzy. // In yet another he reaches / all ten hands toward MOON // and grabs it. Which he takes / to mean HOLD.” And you will want to hold tight to this charming, little collection.”
